"When you get those rare moments of clarity, those flashes when the universe makes sense, you try desperately to hold on to them. They are the life boats for the darker times, when the vastness of it all, the incomprehensible nature of life is completely illusive. So the question becomes, or should have been all a long... What would you do if you knew you only had one day, or one week, or one month to live. What life boat would you grab on to? What secret would you tell? What band would you see? What person would you declare your love to? What wish would you fulfill? What exotic locale would you fly to for coffee? What book would you write?"

Some People Just Don't Get It

I need only to repeat the conversation I had with a patient recently, and you'll see.

All you need to know: Diagnosis- Diverticulitis. Pt is on a clear liquid diet.

patient: Do you think they will advance my diet tomorrow?

Me: Most likely, depending on how your pain is doing, and how you feel. What they will do is move you up to a "Full liquid diet" first, and see how you do with that at breakfast time. If you do well you will most likely get regular food at lunch.

Patient: Whats in a Full liquid diet?

Me: Thicker stuff, more advanced than just clear liquids. Oatmeal, milk, pudding, those kinds of things.

Patient: oh. Thats a problem. I'm lactose intolerant. Like, severely.

Me: Oh, okay no problem. I will write that on your diet orders and they will find things for you to eat that is lactose-free. I am lactose intolerant too, so I'll make sure we find you something to eat.

Patient: Okay, awesome!
Me: How long have you been lactose intolerant?

Patient: Ever since they diagnosed me with diverticulitis, a couple years ago.

Me: I see. Yes the milk products would only aggravate your symptoms more.

Patient: Yeah usually the next day for me. But I really do just miss a nice cold glass of milk.  What do you miss the most?

Me: Oh, I miss pizza.

Patient: Oh, I eat pizza all the time.

Me: .......righteo then.

So much for "severely lactose intolerant". Granted, some lactose intolerants can tolerate small amounts of cheese, but those people should not qualify themselves as "severely lactose intolerant". Jeesh Mcgeesh.

Looking to Hire Web Site Designer...

So I have this idea.

I was thinking about it this morning, how much it sucks being lactose intolerant (most days) and how one of the worst parts about it is not having someone that knows what you're talking about and can complain too. When you meet another lactose intolerant, they just get you automatically with just that one sentence. Automatic friendship.

So I was thinking this morning, I wonder if there is some sort of huge website where lactose intolerants all over the U.S./World can meet and talk to each other? There's gotta be, right?

Well if there is, I can't find one. And google can't find one either.

So I want to make one. Except I have *no idea* how to design a website other than this blog, which is all guided simpfully by blogger.

This website is going to have lots of forums on all different topics...its going to have advice (I don't know where I'll be getting this advice from....), books to read about LI, articles that I find or other people find, maybe a blog on it where anyone can post....and maybe a dating site portion of it where LI's can meet other LI'ers. That would be nice :)

Sometimes I think I try and convert people just so I can have someone to go through the lifestyle with.  Like, I meet someone new and I'm all like, "Oh, you have a stomachache? I bet you're lactose intolerant." "Oh, that headache....hmm, have you had any milk to drink today?" "Oh, can't think clearly? Feeling a little fuzzy? You probably have an intolerance to milk...and cheese, and other dairy....stuff. Like me. *smile*"   "Here, try my dairy free ice cream! Its sooooo good. If you like this, you might like ALL dairy free stuff! woot!"

Occasionally I get someone but then they soon realize they probably aren't LI. *sigh*

So, any website designers out there drastically bored? Like, dramatically bored? Because its going to take a lot of work. Probably. I think. Yes. It will.

OK I have to continue studying for my "Mission Impossible: NCLEX" now, but look forward to a really interesting Nursing blog tonight.....I know, boring, but I promise to make it read-worthy.

PS- If a website like this DOES EXIST, please do me a favor and direct me to it? I would give you a cookie! (A dairy free one, though...you know, to help convert you).

PSS- Is intolerant even a word? Spell checker seems to think not. I think it is.

Meeting with Dietitian

So, my scheduled meeting with the dietitian went great! I was really afraid she would shun me and be all "this is silly- milk is good for you dumbass you need your calcium". But she didn't! She totally supported my necessity and my decision (thats what I call it). So she explained to me my options I can have in the dining hall, and there are a lot more than I thought. So I'm going to try those out today or tomorrow. THere is a special cream cheese- I guess made out of tofu I think she said- that is in the dining hall for LI's. We also found out the eggs technically have milk from the companys website, but she personally asked the chef and he said they do not and that they are just eggs. So, thats good. But, all the bakery items do have milk, as I assumed. The muffins, ( so good), cookies, corn bread..etc. But oh well, I can cut all that out. She said there were even a couple other girls on campus who not only are LI(Lactose Intolerant) but did a lot of research and found that milk should not be consumed at all and that it is a harmful substance. So, I'm not alone on this! She said that the college has grown in numbers with having gluten intolerances, and they have made a special "zone" of the dining hall just for them to go prepare their food, which is excellent. So she said the LI's are growing too and she is doing everything she can to help us. She is also ordering into our convenience store some of my favorite products, so now I can use my points! :-)

I think my intolerance pisses my family (mostly my mom-who has to cook for dinner) and my friends off the most (my friends have to eat with me or get bored while I argue with waiters and waitresses or take 10 years to order something off the friggen menu). But it really doesn't bother me. I feel proud about my decision and feel a lot healthier cutting out milk. One of my friends that I trust the absolute most- does not support the decision though and thinks it is absolutely silly. After I told the friend- they even went and bought a YooHoo Choco Milk to drink, no-chug- in front of me. :-( But that doesn't matter. I believe what I believe and will continue to do more research. I have read two books on it so far and if any of you have recommendations, please comment with them! THank you!

Well, thats it for now. I have to study, all weekend. But, look forward to a post tomorrow most likely. Study breaks are healthy....right? ...right? :)

Soy ish Update again

So I am having my soy milk again and now my lips feel all funny and I don't like it. Thanks to a generous and helpful blog-commenter- see "milk", I am going to try Coconot Milk next and probably ditch the soy. I don't like when my lips feel inflamed and tingly :\

I'll let you know how that goes!

Milk

So I'm not sure which is worse, my organic cocoa puffs, or my soy milk that goes with them. I've been staring at my soy milk for over a month in my fridge now (don't worry its not expired) but have been too afraid to try it. I guess I was afraid it would taste bad when I really needed it to taste good?

I guess its not so bad. It will have to be an acquired taste I suppose. I just dropped a cocoa puff on the floor, oops. Anyway, I still stand behind my decision 100% to go completely milk free. Completely. Not even Lactaid (because technically that still has milk in it). I believe that milk causes many, many, many, MANY, many, many, of America's (and the worlds) health problems. Particuarly stomachaches. And headaches. Nature never intended for milk to be consumed after breastfeeding, especially milk from another animal other than human. Cow's milk is for cow's.

Did you ever stop and think about how Asians are always seemingly healthier than whites? Well, approximately 85% of Asians are lactose intolerant. Countries that don't raise cows have healthier people because they don't drink milk. Milk is caustic. If you ever want to make a very good change in your life, cut out milk. It sucks sometimes, because even though this society is starting to cater to individuals with allergies, there is still hidden milk in soo many products. But all you have to know is how to look at ingredient lists. Maybe in a couple decades this society will pick up on as a whole how detrimental milk is to our body and we can take it out of most of our products, at least.

For those of my readers that are LI or want to try this for their own health--Wegman's, Whole Foods and Shoprite (usually) are great carriers for dairy free products. My favorite dairy free ice cream is Purely Decadent. Remember, no frozen yogurt allowed either! (yogurt has milk). I get my probiotics from Acidophilis now since I used to get that from yogurt. No butter. (some margarines are OK- 'Smart Balance' is usually good but you have to make sure you get a special kind with no milk. No yogurt. No cheese.
Check ingredients on everything.

As for an update, I just finished my cocoa puffs (organic) and the soy milk is liveable with. :-) If you want to read more about what I just vented about, read this book:http://www.pickle-publishing.com/books/dont-drink-your-milk-oski.htm

Its very very interesting and will probably convince you, if I haven't. :-)
